At a graduation ceremony held on Tuesday, 14 December 2010, in the Robert Blackwood Hall at Monash University, Clayton, Melbourne, Australia, Dr Detlev E. Jansen was conferred with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) by the Deputy Chancellor, Mr Ian Pyman.

The PhD award was based on his doctoral dissertation entitled Intercultural business communication: an investigation of the cultural influences on business negotiations in the field of engineering. The brief of the thesis states that the thesis examines intercultural negotiation in the realm of engineering. It identifies variables that influence the intercultural negotiation process in the regions of Far East Asia, South East Asia, Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Latin America and seeks to contribute to a better understanding in an increasingly globalised world.

Dr Jansen, a graduate of the University of South Australia, commenced his studies at the then UNESCO International Centre for Engineering Education (UICEE) in 2001 as an external candidate, being employed by a large company in Germany. His enrolment was through the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Monash University, and he was one of several postgraduate scholars involved in research and development activities at the UICEE.

Staff, associates and members of the former UICEE, and now the WIETE, offer their congratulations to Dr Jansen on this award.
